About this book

The only English guide written for the traveller who draws Japan instead of photographing it — not a list of views, but 200 complete drawing days, each one a composed journey of sittings: the white canal town taken as a value study, the tidal shrine drawn twice as the water decides, the volcano drawn small and whole, the rush-hour concourse taken in ink, the castle town read in contour bands of tea.

Every journey is built from at least three sittings — or one ground drawn in sequence — names its drawing method, and names its characteristic misdrawing: the whirlpool frozen into a portrait, the mountain inflated into a logo, the stranger's face taken without asking. People are drawn by permission or not at all; crowds are pattern, hands are notation, and Part 8 teaches the whole method outright — night, rain, speed, seasons, water's four tempers, animals that won't pose, food before eating — ending with the 201st journey: your own street, drawn as a stranger. Because openings, permissions, tides and seasons change, the book never asserts them as fixed facts: every entry closes with its own official source to confirm before you travel, while the durable part — what the ground is, in what order to draw it, where its misdrawing lies — is given in full.

Eight parts: first sittings — streets and lanes · sacred grounds drawn slowly · water, weather and sky · peaks, valleys and big landscapes · working Japan — hands, tools and trades · old towns and built heritage · the modern city — stations, towers, neon and rush hour · and the sketchbook handbook, journeys keyed by method and subject.
