About this book
Draw the Japanese boat itself — not the voyage, not the scenery, the vessel. This book teaches 100 boats, ships and harbour tools in six unchanging steps: the wooden hull taken apart board by board (stem, keel, strakes, frames), the working craft of Japan at rest — fishing boats, tenma ferries, roofed yakatabune, dugouts and river carriers — every part drawn separately, from the great square sail and the long oar to the iron anchor, the paddle wheel and the propeller, then the great ships as objects: bezaisen coasters, kitamaebune, castle-sterned gozabune and treasure ships, dry and stripped and measurable. It closes with the tools of the port itself: bollards, fenders, buoys, crates, winches and the boatwright's own tool chest. Every lesson declares its sizes and structure before a line is drawn, and ends with a practice page. No waves, no passengers, no scenery: just the vessel, at its true size, until you can draw it from memory.
