About this book
YOU CAN READ THE SKY. NOW LIVE THE YEAR IN JAPANESE: 300 EXPRESSIONS FOR SEASONS, FORECASTS AND WILD WEATHER, 12 DOCUMENTS OF SKY AND SEASON, 12 WRITING TASKS.
Finished Vol.1 through Vol.17? Your Japanese works on paper, on screen, on the road — and at the table. But every day in Japan begins with the sky: the blossom forecast, the chance of rain, the seasonal greeting that opens a letter, the typhoon notice you must read correctly the first time. This is the volume that teaches the Japanese of the turning year, and makes you write with it.
Inside: 300 practical expressions in 20 groups organised by scene — spring blossom and new growth, summer heat and evening storms, autumn colours, winter snow, the turning of the seasons, talking about today's weather, reading forecasts and probabilities, rain in all its forms, wind and clouds, how the air feels, mountains forests and rivers, the sea and lakes, gardens and growing things, wildlife and the night sky, walking and parks, picnics and camping, typhoons and flood alerts, earthquakes and staying safe, climate and caring for nature, and seasonal greetings and letters. Every expression comes with its reading, romaji, meaning, a short usage note — the scene, the person it suits, the level of politeness, the trap to avoid — three natural example sentences in Japanese and English, and a practice space for three sentences of your own: your forecast, your garden, your mountain day.
Plus 12 graded writing tasks in three stages — short notes (the weather told to a friend, a blossom invitation, a rainy-day change of plans, a snowy-day contact note), situation pieces (a mountain-walk invitation, garden flowers, a seasonal greeting letter, worry about a typhoon), then full compositions (my favourite season, a day of weather I can never forget, a report on my home land's nature, a letter about protecting nature) — each with a model answer that really uses this volume's expressions, a self-check list and a full writing grid.
Plus 12 readings of real document genres — blossom forecasts, rainy-season notices, thunderstorm guides, autumn-leaf reports, snow and clearing notices, mountain weather plans, tide and shore guides, garden calendars, typhoon and evacuation notices, earthquake flash reports, stargazing evenings and seasonal letters — each with a full translation, five key words and three questions.
All 300 expressions and all 12 readings are entirely new, with zero overlap against Vol.1–Vol.17 (checked programmatically against all 7,200 earlier headwords and 204 earlier reading titles, no exceptions; every Japanese field passed a character-set scan). The series now trains 4,200 words, 300 sentence patterns, 3,000 practical expressions and 216 readings.
