About this book
Japanese Workbook Vol.23: Pets & Animals Japanese — The Japanese of the Life You Share with an Animal
Registration and the yearly vaccination. The clinic visit where symptoms must be told in order. The sitter's instructions that must be exact. The apology to a neighbour that keeps the street at peace. The poster written the day an animal is lost. If a dog, a cat or a small animal shares your home in Japan, this is the Japanese that life runs on — and it cannot be improvised at the clinic desk.
Part 1 — 300 practical expressions in 20 scene groups Getting a pet, dogs, cats, small animals, birds and fish, feeding, grooming, training and manners, walks and parks, the veterinary clinic, vaccinations, prevention and registration, illness, injury and emergencies, health checks and growing old, home rules and neighbours, pet shops, services and pet-sitters, travel and boarding, costs, insurance and saving, lost pets, adoption and rescue, wild animals, and saying goodbye and remembering. Every expression includes its reading, romaji, English meaning, a usage note (the scene, the care to take, the rule to remember, the words to confirm), three example sentences in Japanese and English, and a ruled practice space for three sentences of your own.
Part 2 — 12 writing tasks in three stages Short care notes (symptoms for the clinic, instructions for a sitter, a greeting to the neighbours, the resolve to welcome a pet), messages that handle a situation (a lost-dog poster, a letter about costs, an adoption application, a note to family), and full written pieces (life with an aged dog, a letter to a child on the value of life, an appeal to local owners, a guide for a friend new to keeping a pet) — each with a model answer that really uses this volume's expressions, a self-check list and a full writing grid.
Part 3 — 12 readings on pet care An explanation of dog registration and rabies vaccination, a guide to a veterinary visit, the promises of keeping a cat indoors, disaster preparation and evacuation with pets, a puppy training class guide, an adoption event notice, care of an aged dog, boarding at a pet hotel, searching for a lost dog, care around wild birds and animals, neutering and community cats, and parting with a pet and cremation procedures — each with a full translation, five key words and three comprehension questions.
Series integrity: zero overlap, no exceptions All 300 expressions and all 12 reading titles were checked item by item against everything in Vol.1–Vol.22 (8,700 headwords and 264 reading titles): overlap zero. Across the twenty-three volumes you now train 4,200 words, 300 sentence patterns, 4,500 practical expressions and 276 readings. One honest note: registrations, subsidies and local rules differ by municipality — this book teaches you to say so and to confirm locally, and it is a language workbook, not a manual of veterinary medicine: it teaches you to describe and to ask, and leaves diagnosis and treatment to the veterinarian.
For learners who have finished Vol.1–Vol.22 or who already read and write Japanese at an advanced level — and above all for anyone whose home in Japan includes an animal.
