About this book
Japanese Workbook Vol.24: Gardening, Plants & Growing Japanese — The Japanese of Soil, Seasons and Harvests
Making the soil and the first beds. Choosing the seed and the seedling. The watering that must be told exactly to the family before a trip. The pruning question that must be asked in the right season. The allotment application that must be written the day the plots open. If a garden, a balcony or a community plot is part of your life in Japan, this is the Japanese that life runs on — and it cannot be improvised at the garden centre desk.
Part 1 — 300 practical expressions in 20 scene groups Starting a garden, seeds and seedlings, watering and daily care, soil, compost and fertiliser, vegetables, herbs and kitchen gardens, flowers through the seasons, balcony and container gardening, trees, shrubs and hedges, lawns and paths, pruning and support, weeds, pests and plant disease, tools and the garden shed, harvesting and sharing, the garden centre and seed shops, community gardens and allotments, bonsai, indoor plants, the gardening year, and gardens, neighbours and wellbeing. Every expression includes its reading, romaji, English meaning, a usage note (the scene, the care to take, the rule to remember, the words to confirm), three example sentences in Japanese and English, and a ruled practice space for three sentences of your own.
Part 2 — 12 writing tasks in three stages Short garden notes (consulting a garden centre about seedlings, asking family to water, sharing out the harvest, planning the garden work), messages that handle a situation (an allotment application, a pruning consultation, an order for seedlings, a thank-you for garden help), and full written pieces (a year of the kitchen garden, a letter to a child, an appeal for the neighbourhood flower bed, a guide for a friend's first garden) — each with a model answer that really uses this volume's expressions, a self-check list and a full writing grid.
Part 3 — 12 readings on gardening The sowing season, starting a kitchen garden, making compost, enjoying a balcony garden, bonsai care, applying for a community garden, a four-season flower bed, harvesting and storing vegetables, choosing seedlings at a garden centre, pruning garden trees, growing houseplants, and facing weeds and pests — each with a full translation, five key words and three comprehension questions.
Series integrity: zero overlap, no exceptions All 300 expressions and all 12 reading titles were checked item by item against everything in Vol.1–Vol.23 (9,000 headwords and 276 reading titles): overlap zero. Across the twenty-four volumes you now train 4,200 words, 300 sentence patterns, 4,800 practical expressions and 288 readings. One honest note: applications, rules and local practice differ by municipality — this book teaches you to say so and to confirm locally, and it is a language workbook, not a manual of gardening: it teaches you to describe and to ask, and leaves the cultivation itself to the garden.
For learners who have finished Vol.1–Vol.23 or who already read and write Japanese at an advanced level — and above all for anyone whose home in Japan includes a garden, a balcony or a plot.
