About this book
Every drawing you have ever made has had a light in it — placed by habit, scattering shadows wherever they fell. This book makes light the lesson.
Light & Shadow teaches the behaviour of light itself through 100 Japanese scenes — shrine gates, castle keeps, stone lanterns, arched bridges, boats, courtyards, snowfields — every one drawn in 6 step-by-step drawings plus its own practice page (700 drawings in all). The subject of each lesson is never the scene. It is a condition of light:
Direction — front light, backlight, side light, top light, light through a gap, light bounced off water The Hours — first light, sunrise, noon, the golden hour, blue hour, moonrise, storm light The Shadow Itself — cast shadows, core shadows, contact shadows, lattice shadows, silhouettes Light That Glows — one lamp's pool, falloff, halos, window spill, the anatomy of a flame Air, Water and Snow — dappled light, shafts in mist, mirror ponds, caustics, the blue shadow on snow
Every lesson begins with a step no other drawing book shows you: Step 1 fixes the light before anything is drawn — a mark where the source stands, the shadow map drawn dashed, and a four-step value key declared in advance. Then the big split into lit and unlit, the carving of form, the single brightest accent (arriving at Step 4, never earlier), and the air itself. Learn to choose your light on purpose, and every scene you draw from now on — Japanese or not — will look inevitable instead of assembled.
No real places are copied and nothing is traced: every scene is a generalised Japanese type, so the technique transfers to any subject on earth.
